Palestine National Council meeting postponed

Meeting Dr Zanoun in Ramallah a day before his decision to postpone the PNC

Earlier today the Palestine National Council (PNC) Chairman, Salim Zanoun announced his decision to postpone the meeting of the PNC, that was supposed to take place on September 14th. His decision showed leadership and wisdom in giving adequate time for consultation with all factions in preparation of a regular session, which should strengthen unity and chart the way forward. I made a statement welcoming this inclusive approach, given the necessity of convening a regular session of the PNC, which has not met in almost two decades.

I also urged all Palestinian leaders and factions to seize this opportunity to take constructive steps towards achieving genuine unity on the basis of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) principles, and to strengthen the PLO as the sole and legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. This would be an important step forward towards ending the occupation and realising a just and lasting solution on the basis of two states — Palestine and Israel, living side-by-side in peace, security and mutual recognition.
