First Meeting with Muslim Religious Authorities in Jerusalem

This morning I had a very engaging meeting with His Eminence Sheikh Abdul Azim Salhab, Chairman of the Waqf Council, and Sheikh Azam Abed Alkhatib Altamimi, Director of Jerusalem Waqf Department.

I wanted to talk to them before the Holy Month of Ramadan and to discuss the current situation and the challenges they face. We agreed on the need to respect the Jordanian custodial authority and status quo over the Holy Sites in Jerusalem. All parties should refrain from provocations that could escalate tensions in and around the Al-Aqsa Compound.

I also encourage the Israeli authorities to lift access restrictions for Palestinian worshippers to their Holy Sites in Jerusalem.

Later in the day, Israel announced a series of measures to ease access and movement restrictions for Palestinians from the West Bank for the Ramadan.
